Project KIK-OV: Opportunities in Synthetic Materials - Education Flanders

With this project we aim to achieve that youngsters:

Discover the synthetics sector and its industry, including its regulated professions, professional conditions, career opportunities, boundary conditions ...

Young people need to become aware of the fact that an enormous amount of daily consumer goods are made of synthetic materials. This way they can take into account the possibilities within the sector of synthetics at the stage of their studie orientation and study choice.

  • By doing so there will be an inflow to the sector.
  • They enlarge their conditions of access to sustainable employment in the occupational group of synthetics.
  • They build a correct image of the sector.

Realize that they will for ever live in an era of synthetic materials.
The synthetics sector is in the vanguard of our actual and future economy, with a lot of growth potential ...

Main goal

The synthetics industry has several innovation domains: leisure and sports, medicine, construction, transport, ... which makes our society more energy efficiënt.
Fuel cells use polymer membranes to convert oxigen and hydrogen into electricity, warmth, water.

Discover the recycling opportunities of synthetics and learn to participate proactively in the process of recycling them.
The synthetics industry strives to protect the global natural resources for our future generations by means of sustainable development of sails and wind turbine enclosures, in the pipelines that supply the hydro-electric power plants, flexible solar panels, modern solar water heaters. Even when the sky is grey these solar water heaters can produce up to 65% of the annual water needs in a household.

Intermediaries involved in the project:
  • Principals, technical advisers, teachers and employees at the Student Guidance Centre of the central schools for synthetics technology.
  • Principals, technical advisers, teachers and employees at the Student Guidance Centre of secondary schools with related technical courses.
  • Principals and employees at the Student Guidance Centres.
  • Tutors at the trainee companies.
  • Managers in the synthetics sector.
  • Employees at the Flemisch Employment Services and Vocational Training Agency.
  • Sector counsellors WVOK (non-profit organization Work training Synthetics Technology).
  • The parents (of their representatives).
Final target group:

Future young job seekers (gender neutral) from technical secondary education or vocational secondary education (15 to 18 years old).
Since one can only attend the synthetics techniques and processing courses from the third stage on, this project focusses on youngsters from the second stage.
Actually the synthetics training (3rd stage) mainly gets its inflow from the mechanics and electricity courses. KIK-OV aims to increase the inflow with youngsters from other courses of study. Shortly after the expiration of KIK-OV the new courses within the system of part-time vocational training will be put into practice. More schools, especially those that offer part-time vocational training, can then offer synthetics courses. Within the system of part-time vocational training the gender balance can be improved in favour of the girls in the synthetics technology courses.

Final results and products:

An information trunk for teachers, employees at the Student Guidances Centres...

This trunk contains:

  • Products that are manufactured by the newest production techniques.
  • A didactic manual, digitally accessible to everyone and on paper to the intermediaries (=broader that the products in the trunk, focusses more on other products, the most modern production techniques ...).
  • Professional films (on a USB stick) that were made in the workshops of the central schools, with the pupils in the main roles.
  • An educational leaflet for the students.
  • Three educational digital newsletters for the students and their parents.
  • A website students and teachers can consult if they have questions.
