Applying for equivalence:
Secondary education diploma obtained abroad

NL | EN

What does this equivalence mean and who can apply for it?

The decree of equivalence is an official confirmation of the equivalence of a foreign certificate to a Flemish diploma of secondary education. Individuals who have received part or all of their secondary education abroad and have gained there a final diploma, can submit an application for equivalence of their foreign study certificate. However, a number of conditions have to be met:

  • The applicant is 18 or is no longer subject to compulsory education.
  • The applicant lives in Flanders or Brussels.
  • The applicant is not enrolled in an education institution of the French Community.
  • The applicant does not have the intention to enrol in Flemish higher education.

Procedure

During the equivalence procedure, it is examined on the basis of a number of criteria whether the foreign certificate can be considered equivalent to a Flemish diploma of secondary education.

Composition of the application file

A file will only be processed when it is complete. If there are documents missing in your file, you still have six months to submit them. If you fail to submit the missing documents to NARIC-Vlaanderen within six months' time, your file is closed.

Please note: Never send original documents! Nevertheless, you must be able to present them if your case officer requires this. In the context of the investigation, we may ask you to provide other documents at all times.

If your original supporting documents are drawn up in Dutch, English, French or German:

  • a fully completed and signed application form;
  • a copy of your diploma or certificate.
  • a copy of your identity card;
  • a mark sheet of the final exam or the report of the final year of secondary education.

If your original supporting documents are not drawn up in Dutch, English, French or German, please also enclose:

What if the name of my ID card does not match the name on my study certificate?

In this case your application must be accompanied by an official explanation for that derogation.
